WHAT ARE FOOD CERTIFICATIONS ISO 22000, BRC AND IFS?

  • BRC Food Technical Standard and Protocol for food suppliers
  • IFS International Food Standard
  • ISO 22000 Food Safety management

These are the three world-wide benchmarks for food supply chain certifications

The international standard ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System - "Requirements for any organisation in the food chain" was drawn up by a working group of experts from 23 different countries and representatives of international organisations such as the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the International Association of Hotels and Restaurants, the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and the Confederation of Agro-Food Industries of the European Union (CIAA). It has been published in order to harmonise existing national and international food safety and haccp standards.

BRC and IFS are two international standards for quality certification in the supply chain of large-scale retail trade (GDO) products.

The acronym BRC stands for British Retail Consortium, or the British Retail Consortium, is a standard required for all suppliers wishing to enter the British retail market.

The IFS standard, on the other hand, is an international standard shared by the French and German large-scale retail chains. This Standard requires suppliers in the supply chain to comply with certain hygiene regulations and good practices in production processes, which are valid to guarantee a good level of safety and quality.

WHO IS INTERESTED IN THESE CERTIFICATIONS?

The ISO 22000, BRC and IFS certifications are standards that can be applied by all operators in the food system: farmers, processing and packaging industry, transporters, distributors, wholesale and retail traders, manufacturers of equipment and plants for the food industry, packaging material, detergent and disinfection products, and is a reference point for the application of EU regulations on food safety and hygiene. It also enables all companies involved in the supply chain to identify the risks to which they are exposed and manage them effectively.
