ISO 50001 Energy management systems
WHAT IS ISO 5001 - energy management system?
ISO 50001 (energy management system) sets out the requirements for the implementation of all policies dedicated to efficient energy management, dictating the guidelines that organisations should follow in order to improve performance in this respect.
These requirements cover all business processes and personnel involved, taking into account factors that affect the measurement, documentation, design and equipment used to train energy performance. However, the parameters set out in ISO 50001 are of a qualitative nature, and do not have a specific quantitative measurement.
Its main requirements concern:
■ the implementation of energy policies characterised by concrete and measurable objectives
■ identification of energy uses, identifying the critical areas and elements that have the greatest influence on consumption
■ the periodic forecast of consumption and their systematic comparison with actual consumption
■ the inclusion of energy consumption in decision-making processes such as design and purchase of plants, raw materials, services, etc..
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?
Among the main advantages there are:
- the ability to use in-house experts to assess the compliance and efficiency of your energy management system
- ensuring continuous improvement in the application of energy management methods and organising themselves to better manage their evaluation
- demonstrate to all stakeholders your commitment to environmental protection, as well as to profitability and cost reduction.
WHICH COMPANIES ARE INTERESTED IN CONSULTING FOR ISO 50001 CERTIFICATION?
Adherence to the standard is voluntary; all companies and organisations wishing to improve their energy efficiency performance can join the certification process.
ISO 50001 certification is suitable for large and small organisations, in the public and private sectors, in manufacturing and services, with the aim of bringing organisations (and the whole community) economic benefits deriving from lower energy consumption and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN ISO 50001?
The standard is based on a PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) approach and therefore provides for the implementation of correct energy policies characterised by objectives aimed at implementing targeted actions and, subsequently, at controlling and verifying how energy use is reduced, with the aim of continuous improvement.
Its main requirements concern the implementation of energy policies characterized by measurable objectives and targets, the identification of the requirements of current legislation regarding use/consumption/energy efficiency, the inclusion of energy consumption in decision-making processes, the definition of an organizational structure for the purposes of the AMS, the preparation of written procedures, monitoring activities of energy performance characteristics.
The certificate of compliance of the SGE with the ISO 50001 standard is issued by an accredited, third party and independent body (certification body) and is valid for three years (renewable), subject to periodic surveillance visits.
